Effects of flooding duration on the occurrence of three hardwood floodplain forest species inside and outside a dike relocation area at the Elbe River

Floodplain forests have become rare in Europe due to anthropogenic changes. A critical aspect of their restoration is reintroducing flooding via dike relocation, as implemented at the Elbe River near Lenzen/Germany. How forest development influenced by relocation still unclear and difficult predict. Inside area River, most trees were planted. Due high tree mortality, we asked if relative elevation planted thus number days inside was comparable prevailing regime surrounding active floodplain. Therefore, positions Ulmus laevis, Quercus robur, Crataegus monogyna individuals recorded using a DGPS merged with digital terrain model. Subsequently, elevations numbers per year growing season (averages for 2011–2017) calculated. The tolerant species, U. occurred lowest sites tolerated highest days, followed Q. finally least species C. monogyna. All three lower exposed longer durations compared outside area.
